Top 3 Things YOU Can Do NOW To Help Your Child with ADHD

As a Mom, I know how much I wanted to help my son who has ADHD and I didn’t know where to begin. Today, in this blog post, I will be sharing the top 3 things you can do to move the needle in the right direction. I was able to be on the Health Made Easy Podcast with Dr. Jason Jones and here’s a bit of what we discussed.

You’re child has just been diagnosed with ADHD and you are feeling very overwhelmed. How do I know that? Well, it’s because I was in your shoes 14 years ago. I was on a hunt to help my child and I truly didn’t know where to begin. I talked to friends, doctors, read books and did my research. As a mom on the other side and as a Certified Health Coach who specializes in working with parents of kids with ADHD, I wish someone would have told me these 3 things, so here we go 🙂

Keep a Food Journal

Write down everything your child is eating and then beside it write down the behavior you are observing. If you observe a not so favorable behavior, it’s time to label read and see what is in the food. When I work with a client, I help them understand what all those words mean on the label and what behaviors they might see if they give that to their child.

Have a Healthy Bedtime Routine

Children with ADHD thrive on routines and structure and they NEED their sleep. Sleep restores our brain and bodies and kids with ADHD truly need that restorative sleep to be able to function at school.. Shutting off the electronics 2 hours before bedtime, taking a magnesium supplement like Natural Calm can help with sleep and also incorporating essential oils like doTerra’s Lavender into an epsom salt bath or sprinkled on their pillow or in a diffuser can aid in sleep as well.

Daily Exercise is Essential

Studies have proven that 60 minutes a day of daily exercise can calm a child with ADHD. Martial arts have long been recommended as this practice also helps with discipline. Biking, swimming, soccer, dance are some ways to get that 60 minutes a day. Exercise naturally increases dopamine in the brain and many of our kids are lacking dopamine and that will help them focus.
