Top Trends in Nutrition and Food for 2021

What are the Top Trends in Food and Nutrition?

Let’s face it, 2020 was a rough year and it truly has affected the trends we are seeing when it comes to food and nutrition in 2021. More people are focused on their health and wellness not only for themselves but for their entire family. With many people struggling with unemployment or reduced wages, which was popular a year ago, is not necessarily all the rage now.

Which Diets are the Most Popular and Why?

The Mediterranean Diet, The Flexitarian, and the DASH Diet are now the top diets in America. The Mediterranean Diet focuses on eating vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans, lentils, and peas. It limits sugar, sodium, processed foods, refined carbs, saturated fats, and fatty or processed meats.

The Flexitarian Diet focuses on eating mostly fruits, veggies, legumes, and whole grains. Protein mostly comes from plant protein with a minimal amount of coming from animals. Dairy and animal protein is allowed on a limited basis. Limit added sugar and sweets.

The DASH Diet has been around since the 1990s and stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. This diet focuses on plant-based foods, low fat, and non-fat dairy, lean meats, poultry, and fish. It limits red meat, salt, and added sugars and fats.

Many people are looking toward staples like dried beans, rice, and other whole grains to fill the gap as well as fill the belly since money is tight and food is sparse for those who are trying to pay their bills and provide for their family during a pandemic. These diets accommodate these foods making them the most popular at this time in history.

The Least Popular Diets in 2021

Two diets that are seeing a decrease in popularity is Whole 30 and Keto diets. Why you might ask? They are very difficult to follow and the items that are needed to fully participate in these diets can be expensive and many people aren’t able to keep up with it.

What Do I Eat?

I eat primarily a Paleo Diet also known as the Caveman Diet. A Paleo Diet primarily focuses on eating lean proteins, fatty fish (for me that means Salmon), fresh fruits and nuts, nut butter, and seeds. Cutting out dairy, grains, and legumes help to lower inflammation naturally as dairy can be very inflammatory as well as legumes can be as well. Eggs are allowed on a Paleo diet, however, I choose not to eat eggs as I have noticed that they don’t agree with me. This diet can also be explained as clean eating. Of course, processed foods, high salt, and sugary foods are a no-no 🙂

What’s the Best Diet for You?

You are the only person who can answer that. I advise my clients to keep a Food Journal and track whatever they have eaten for a week, noting how a specific food made them feel physically and emotionally. For example, if you eat yogurt, how does your stomach feel and how is your mood? A food diary can pinpoint intolerances and help guide you to the best diet for YOU !!

Many people are struggling today with intolerances to many foods because of the way these foods are grown and the lack of nutrients in our soil these days. That being said, many people today struggle with dairy and gluten and find that a diet without them allows their intestinal tract to heal and their gut to be the best it can be. We must have a healthy gut to have a healthy body and brain.
