New Year’s Resolutions or Not?

Do New Year’s Resolutions Work or Not?

The age-old question. Do New Year’s resolutions work or not? Research has shown that 91% of people who make resolutions will quit somewhere in their journey. There is hope though. In this blog post, I will be discussing options for creating sustainable habits instead of making resolutions.

New to me? I’m Mary, a Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach and I believe in holistic health. Incorporating your lifestyle, your exercise, your attitude, and your nutrition along with mental wellness and spiritual health are important for your WHOLE self. One of my greatest joys as a Health Coach is walking alongside my clients and watching them make sustainable changes and the joy they feel as we create THEIR healthiest selves.

What We All Can Do Instead of Making Resolutions

Since we have already established that 91% of people who make resolutions will quit them, then what are we to do? We know we want to make some changes to better our health and it seems that starting on January 1st would be the most logical step, but is it?

Personally, I have not made a New Year’s resolution in years.  I do think about the changes I would like to make in my life and then make a plan to incorporate one small step toward that change.  Here are some tips to help you with the changes you want to make this New Year.

Set a S.M.A.R.T. Goal

S.M.A.R.T. Goals – An acronym for goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.  An example of a SMART goal would be: I will walk 5 days a week for 30 minutes a day.

S – Specific -What will be accomplished? What actions will you take?

M – Measurable -What data will measure the goal? (How much? How well?)

A – Achievable– Is the goal doable? Do you have the what you need to achieve the goal?

R – Relevant -Is this a good goal to start with? Why is the result important?

T – Time-Bound -What is the time frame for accomplishing the goal?

Find an Accountability Partner

Buddy up with someone who is looking to achieve a health goal similar to yours.  Having someone to encourage you when you are not feeling like working out can greatly increase your chance of success. Research shows that having a specific accountability partner gives you a 95% success rate. Don’t be shy about asking someone either. My dearest friend Ruthie, approached me 3 years ago when we were going for a business goal and we have become like sisters now so you never know how someone can bless your life.

Give Yourself Grace

Research shows that it can take on average 66 days to form a habit so give yourself grace and remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day 🙂

So whether you decide to make a New Years’ resolution or not, take it one step at a time and put your best foot forward, and remember it’s okay to start over when things don’t go as planned. We always learn something through the process and that one thing we learn can be the one thing that catapults us to our next greatest achievement.
