The Best Bang for Your Buck

There are many voices on the internet that are telling us all what to feed out kids and ourselves.  As I do my research there are some foods that just give us a bigger bang for our buck.  Since our children have such great needs, it’s extremely important to get the best quality food we can.  As your health coach, it’s my job to do the research and report what I have found to truly be the Best choice.  So here goes:

The Best Bread:  Ezekial Sprouted Bread and Ezekial Sprouted for Life Gluten Free Breads. Why? The sprouting of grains makes them easier to digest and there is increased absorption of nutrients including antioxidants, vitamin c, vitamin b and minerals. No flour is used and only certified organic grains.

The Best Eggs:  Not all eggs are created equal.  There are six different varieties of eggs on the market and the labeling is tricky.  Many marketing techniques are used to make you think you are getting an egg with all the things our brains need, like Omega 3 or vegetarian fed, however these labels are deceiving.  After careful examination, the conclusion is that Pasture Raised Eggs are the best.  Why? Pasture raised hens actually do what they are supposed to do which is roam, peck, nibble and they have specially formulated foods to ensure that the consumer is getting the best nutrient dense egg possible.

They have less of the bad stuff:

  • 1/3 less cholesterol than conventional eggs
  • 1/4 less saturated fat than conventional eggs

They also have more of the good stuff:

  • 2/3 times more vitamin A
  • 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
  • 3 times more vitamin E
  • 4 to 6 times as much vitamin D
  • 7 times more beta-carotene

The Best Oatmeal:  Oatmeal is a great way to start your day or your kids’ day, however, it’s important to read those labels to ensure you are getting the best you can get.  Once again, companies market to kids with dinosaur shapes which are made from artificial colors and flavors.  Oats are packed with fiber and are a great source of vitamin E, B complex and Zinc.

It’s best to look for organic oats whenever possible and add your own berries, nuts, cinnamon and a dash of maple syrup or honey to sweeten it up.

That’s just a few ways to get the most bang for your buck with the foods we choose 🙂

Until next time,

Mary
